Education Support
- a) School Fees Payment
The focus of the Kanyogoga Project is to enable children from the families registered on the project to attend school and complete their education. It is our hope and desire that by educating these children fully, we shall have created a pathway out of poverty for them and their families.
As at March 2020, the project had 32 registered families and 52 children supported with school (tuition) fees. They range from 6 to 20 years of age; with the youngest in Primary One (1st Grade) to the eldest in his final year of college.
As at December 2019, two (2) students had completed their courses in Bio-Medical Engineering and Computer Studies respectively.
Three (3) students are pursuing degrees in; Medical Laboratory Science at Clarke International University, Software Engineering and BA. Industrial Fine Art at Makerere University.
One (3) students opted for vocational skills training in; Catering and hotel management (final year), Motor Vehicle Mechanics and Electrical Installation and are currently in their first year.
Another three (3) students successfully completed high school last year should have joined higher institutions of learning, this year 2020- only hampered by the Covid-19 Lockdown
15 students are in secondary school and 28 in Primary
- b) Career Guidance
A key aim of the ministry is to ensure that our children gain employable skills as and when they complete their education. Based on their O-Level grades we provides career guidance with options of either tertiary institution (college or university) education or vocational skills training.
To support life skills development, we organize weekly counseling, sensitization and training sessions for girls and boys above P.6 to help them in making healthy and informed life choices. These sessions are conducted by volunteering members of the congregation or any other recommended persons and they help the students to attain skills and knowledge in areas like communication, reproductive health, career choices, vocational skills like baking, Art and Crafts, music and dance among others.
This also helps in identifying and nurturing and gifts among the children we support
- c) After School Remedial Reading Program
While there has been some notable success in the academic performance of the children on the program, it was also clear that a number of them were struggling with very poor grades. During interactions with the children and their parents it emerged that a lack of English comprehension made it difficult for them to grasp what was being taught in the classroom.
The Project has since 2018 introduced a remedial reading program. This takes place every day of the week during the school holidays and already, there has been a noticeable improvement in the pupils’ grades as the year progressed.
- d) Extra-curricular Activities
It is a widely acknowledged fact that children and young people, who engage in activities/programs besides school work, develop confidence in themselves and learn lessons for life.
Studies have also shown that participation in after school programs encourages children and youth to stay out of trouble by using their time productively.
To this end, Kanyogoga project has introduced a number of extra-curricular activities to engage the children. These include:
-music lessons where children learn how to play a musical instrument
-A traditional dance and drama troupe.
-A weekend/school holiday camp where they learn computer coding, painting and play games.
